Originally, the long nose mask fashion started during the days of the black plague. Doctors would fashion masks using paper mache and then stuff the nose with gauze and other herbs to 1) override the smell of death and decay and 2) they thought that they wouldn't catch the plague. It was only later that they realized that the fleas were spreading the plague.
